Despite the CoC’s missteps in pitching a just right level of difficulty for the targeted hunters,  overall it was a good hunt.  Error free tulips, adequate time, huntable routes and  no long wait for the answers presentation.  They even gave out CD of the answer presentation after the hunt. The CD is indeed a nice touch especially to the new hunters who might wants to go thru it at their own pace.

If  anything,  I think using only part of a shop/company name is not very correct nor elegant.  For e.g  the answer  “De” taken from “De Zai Hair …..” or ‘Busana” from “Busana J&Z”.

CoCs should not try too hard to make it hard for the regulars.  Set tough questions if you must, but keep it simple, creative and smart.  COC should try to out-smart the hunters, not whack us on the head with a sledgehammer. Outwitted hunters will  willingly kick our own backs and want more. Injured hunters stay at home to recuperate for a long time.

Also for bigger crowd in their future hunts, the venue today is really not suitable.

Both Kroll and Hagi have shown great positive attitude towards feedback/suggestions from fellow hunters in the weeks leading to this hunt. They are willing to listen.

So I’m sure with this experinces under their belts,  their next and future hunts can only be better than their courageous effort today.

Congratulations to the Winners.

O,Double Curse (O Bi Damn) Hunt. Me and my team mates was almost pitam as well. Not encouraging for novices at all. This will scare them away from hunting scene.

agreed….it was a very tough hunt indeed….more suitable as festive hunt rather than novice encouragement hunt…let me go ‘pitam’ for a while

    How many teams solved T6?

    Hmmm.

T1: Wonder if the CoC would have accepted a black pearl? Or even a football for that matter! Time and again these one liners continue to be a peril to the CoC.

T6: I’d be surprised if someone actually solved this. Mixing sounds like and anagram clues, you’ll almost need ESP to know what the CoC needs :)

If I were the COC, I’d have given bonus points for black pearls ;-)

    my oh my…

just went through the Q&A, i am in a daze and seeing “bi” now.

Think i would have failed miserably as i couldnt answer most of the Q even if i was standing in front of the answers.

Thanks Mike for everything! It was a great pleasure to learn from you!

I believe the opportunity to learn with different teammates and the concept of this hunt is good, but perhaps the questions were a tad bit too hard for the novices.

Every once in a while, we do need to test other methods and team mates, and this will definitely speed up the learning curve of the novices!

Thank you to Hagi & Kroll for organizing this hunt. On the whole, it was well organized. The questions did give me a hangover though. ;-) The CD handouts was a nice touch with us grabbing like hot cakes! Good thing it wasn’t raining heavily else I would have gotten rain water in my rice (space constraint indoors).

And thanks to Tommy Lee, Kelvin & Jian Yee for letting me ride in the team.

    See you all again soon!

Only 2 top teams passed the hunt (assuming passing rate at 50%). In terms of achieving the objective of this hunt, i.e. “to encourage and develop novice hunters”, I’d say the CoC failed miserably. But, yes, that looks about right for a new CoC.

When one plays the game from the setter’s point of view, all the riddles will appear “easy”. There is therefore that tendency to over-complicate matters. It is very easy to ignore other factors of the hunts such as time pressure, traffic jams, games and puzzles, even fighting and debates in the car etc which would have a big impact on the route questions.

Last year, I was lucky enough to hunt in the Hunters Challenge, which was, if I remember correctly, also meant to encourage new hunters and develop treasure hunting. And of course only the top 2 teams (or was it 3 teams?) passed the hunt. That hunt was an effort by what I’d consider an elite hunting team. Although I criticised that hunt as a whole, the questions, when taken as a whole, were well crafted. And when taken independently, I’d say there is not much more room, if any, to improve on the quality of the questions. What I liked in those questions was the fact that they were generally true to the cryptic rules. In fact, I’d venture to say that I would’ve been proud to have crafted some of those questions myself!

Now I’m itching to analyse the Qs for this hunt. But having downloaded the Powerpoint presentation above, I’m having trouble viewing the content! Maybe that is a blessing in disguise, because perhaps I shouldn’t be analysing hunt Qs in the office! (smile) I guess I’ll just have to wait till this evening (hopefully I can view the powerpoint presentation from my home pc) before I can comment further on the Qs. But I find Master Adrian’s comment above very interesting!

Hi Ckoh, I’d like to repeat this one last time (because you ARE getting on my nerve)!

We (HRU) encourage non-GMs in different ways like giving such teams more hunting time. But when we label an event a “Challenge” it is meant to be a “CHALLENGE”.

And if I rememeber correctly, you were one of those that “benefited” from the extra hour. So QUIT putting yourself in the same shoes as those who “suffered” due to our “oversight”!

    2R1I,

You did label the hunt as a CHALLENGE—I’m not disputing that at all. Just that from what I’ve gathered from other hunters in general, your level of challenge was not what was expected by them.

I never said that I did not benefit from the time handicap. In fact, let me say it here that I did benefit. My comment above was from the general point of view. When commenting from my own point of view, I’d make it clear, e.g.

I’d say there is not much more room, if any, to improve on the quality of the questions. What I liked in those questions was the fact that they were generally true to the cryptic rules. In fact, I’d venture to say that I would’ve been proud to have crafted some of those questions myself!

And that is the truth from my point of view. I meant that as a compliment, my friend. I’m making this particular comment not just because we are friends; rather because I truly feel the questions were good. If the questions were lousy, I would’ve commented accordingly.

Am sorry for getting onto your nerve. Didn’t mean to. Am just giving my opinion here and happened to have quoted your hunt as an example. I did so without malice. In fact, if there is a Hunters Challenge 2 on the horizon, I am looking forward to it! Unfortunately, I don’t have enough field experience, and therefore not many examples to quote from. I am fully aware that not all agree with me, and I can accept that others may have totally different opinions. Please accept my apology.

    OUT OF TOPICS A bit…
The sound system (small speakers & mic) we used yesterday is open for rental at RM50.00 per hunt. After 7 use (current count =1), the rental will go down to RM10-RM20 only (to buy better battery packs worth RM300 per unit, can last 3 hours without AC) after that can use for FREE!!! (as long as the battery packs still OK, once ‘kiok’ i’ll start charging again :) )…
    Thanks :)

The hunt it tough.. at the beginning, middle and the end. And, probably things did got slightly better along the way.

Nevertheless, congrats to Krull and Hagi for organising the well organised Jimat Hunt ‘10. While I think I am now having a slight migraine because of it, it was actually a pretty decent hunt. It is not everyday I swooned (a few times) during a hunt, right?

The CD, as Claire had mentioned, is a pretty awesome.

Personally, I am looking forward for more hunts like this in the future, I think. :-)

Thanks Mike for the “encouraged” comments. And thanks all Hunters – participants or otherwise – for participating and for giving your comments. All comments will be noted for future Hunts. Yes, we agree that the Qs were just too tough for the Novice Hunters. For the Regulars and Masters, we believe if they are hunting in their “full team”, it would make the Qs to be seen as “not that tough”.

Kroll and me will continue to organize more of this “Mentoring Hunt” to encourage more Novices to “stay” in the Hunting scene. Only the next time, we will make sure it is a “Mentoring” and not “Tormenting” Hunt as aptly put by Dato Ramesh. And we hope the next time around more “Masters” would participate!

    Thanks again

Hagi, thanks for doing the hunt.

You had this other idea for a hunt where everyone contribute one question. Should seriously consider it.

    Cheers.

The Qs were strange and tough, not because of degree of difficulties, but due the usage of non-standard non-common word play being used (both english and malay). So, the fun part already out, tapi pening part banyak. These type of Qs will definitely shy hunters away from joining future thunts.

The objective of the hunt apparently forgotten … where the beginners may feel discouraged to participate in future hunts. Also, this looked like embarassing the masters/regular, where they could not guide/show their thunt skills.

The Qs should be watered down, and leave 5Qs little bit difficult.

Would recommend to follow Qs as per COC Michael, Zarol, Ricky, Sam, TOS, and others
