It’s possible to enjoy a hunt even if you don’t like the questions?
When Adrian contacted the team about going for this hunt, I immediately said okay. It’s Uncle Chong’s hunt and you know for sure that the questions will be cryptically sound and the winners won’t be decided by some game of chance. The only thing is I’m not a fan of his style. 18 out of 30 questions had the word “answer” in them. Most of the questions are solved by adding the anagram of a word to the answer (often anagram of the answer) to form another word.
A + Answer = C
Q: Terrible drink is consumed by intoxicated answer to arrive at a high place
A: Paul
This sort of questions can be tough but I don’t find it very creative. You can practically use any signboard to come out with a question using this style.
And then, we have the surface reading.
One of the things that I enjoy and admire about good cryptic question is the surface reading that paints a picture of a situation to throw solvers on a different path from what the setter actually mean. That’s where the beauty lies. In Uncle Chong’s questions, the sentences are constructed for the single purpose of making sure it fits the cryptic requirements and nothing else.
The above are of course a matter of taste, in the end all things considered Uncle Chong’s hunt are of high quality and enjoyable. I often learn new words and new facts from his hunt. And perhaps, the most important reason I will always support Uncle Chong’s hunt is the commitment he puts into his hunt and that he does all these hunts for no other reasons except for his love and passion for the sport.
